GIBRALTAR TOUR 5th – 10th APRIL
The touring party gathered at a very busy pre-Easter Gatwick for the two hours and a bit flight to Gibraltar. Messrs Keir and Manley positioned themselves cunningly at the rear of the aircraft to solicit extra drink from the cabin staff, and Graham Boxall secured the last beer on the plane; a good start. Having arrived and checked in at the Bristol Hotel, a subsequent search for food only elicited peanuts, crisps and loads of ale at a nearby pub (this is known on Ramblers tours as a ‘bonding session’)

The first game on Good Friday produced a limited overs ‘tie’ (that’s two in the last 3 Ramblers games) against fellow tourists, the Sussex over 50s, who, amongst their number, although not playing, was one Andy Meads – a Rambler of some time ago. Immediately in the runs were John Hamilton, and David Simcock, with his first club half century. The tie was secured by a Sussex batter being bowled off the last ball. Back at the hotel it was the first session of fines and thence onwards to the excellent Gatsbys for dinner; very good food, unending supplies of very quaffable local (Spanish) reds and whites, and voluptuous waitresses.

Saturday brought the first game against local opposition, who batted first on a chilly day of only occasional sunshine. Because of the vagaries of the sandy/gritty outfield and consequent reluctance of the fielders to dive about, the usual Europa Point high score resulted, despite all the bowlers doing their best – having learned to pitch the ball up. A poor start with the bat put us on the back foot, but the careful Andy Lemmey and flamboyant Jon Ashworth got up to the required rate, but when the latter went, it was only the skipper, John Hamilton, who made any sort of a score, aided by a Sam Keir cameo, and we were well short at the end. There was nothing for it then apart for more unreasonable fines and a return trip to Gatsby’s where with another convivial evening, the day’s travails were quickly forgotten.
THE CAPTAIN’S HAD A LONG DAY
Sunday was the ‘free’ day; late rising and some tourism – which consisted mainly of going up in the cable car to see the apes and St Michael’s Cave, followed by repairing to local hostelries with Sky TV to watch England take on Australia in the World Cup. The family Terry, showing much more form, spent the day in Cadiz.

Monday and Match 3 and the Ramblers were invited to bat first. A cautious start – wanting to build a reasonable platform, resulted in some loss of scoring momentum, so at the end of our overs we were probably around 40 runs short of a safely defendable total. Graham Boxall, John Hamilton and David Simcock however all contributed significantly. A first ball wicket from Alex Manley was an immediate encouragement, but despite taking wickets reasonably regularly, the opposition could never quite be pinned down enough. After the final session of fines at the hotel it was off to the tour dinner at the Waterfront restaurant, for an excellent meal and apposite speech from the skipper, reinforcing the Ramblers ethos and with toasts to absent friends and the club.
Tuesday was free all day until gathering for the flight home in the early evening, and the tourists did their thing in the time available (the captain and secretary lunching well but not necessarily wisely at the marina). Arrival at Gatwick was around 11 o’clock and the party dispersed, after an enjoyable 16th tour where we had debutant tourists, where everyone got on well, had fun, and played a bit of cricket. Where next ?

A steady start established a run rate of round three an over – satisfctory on what was a slow wicket with low bounce. Skipper Simon Swainson went firt, leaning back to cut and losing his off bail, to be replaced by James Straker who drove freely in his usual forceful way, but was then bowled third bounce by a girl. Brian Davenport went lbw after a long and mildly tedious sojourn, but then James Crowne, after a hesitant start, settled in for a good innings, assisted briefly by a belligerent Sam Keir. James and Ed Jones, with good, sharp running then put on 62 when shortly after, the declaration and tea came.
With around 39 overs to reach their target at just over 4 an over the scene was st for a good contest, and the Blackheath openers set off forcefully, and passed the half century before being split. Wickets then fell at regular intervals whilst the score advanced, highlighted by three catches by James Straker – one of them a searing drive diverted from the hands of Russell Farnham at ‘dolly’ pace. The draw at least would have been achieved except for an ‘unfortunate’ umpiring run out decision – given not out with the batter a clear yard short of his ground, and one late expensive over. But an enjoyable match in which all the team played their part in this the Ramblers third visit as part of Blackheath’s cricket week.

Sydenhurst Ramblers gave Malcolm Hooker a one and a half pint beer mug, a plaque for his new pavilion, a tie, and a victory, by 19 runs in our first ever two day, two innings match. Surprisingly the match ran its full course, despite the fact that both sides scored incredibly few runs in both their innings.
The Ramblers won the toss and elected to field. Darroch and Wentworth-Waites made it look as though a three or four innings match might become necessary. In the short space of time that it took for Malcolm to have a shower, the Maniacs slumped to 9 for 3. This early collapse was helped by some splendid Ramblers fielding. Jim Terry took a diving catch at square leg, which he will remember for the rest of his life and of which Colin Bland or Jonty Rhodes would have been justifiably proud. Later in the same innings Arwyn Jones took a beautiful catch, low down, at deep mid-wicket, Arwyn and Charlie Thwaites bowled beautifully on a tricky wicket and Charlie ended up with a first innings average of 2.2. The Maniacs only managed to score 85 runs all out and it looked as though the match could be over in a day.
The Ramblers fared no better. In fact they concluded their innings six runs short of the Maniacs, the only batsman offering any real resistance being Will Gough, who played an extremely responsible innings of 29.
With three quarters of an hour to go on the first day, the Maniacs commenced their second innings and, at close of play, were 23-1. Resuming their innings in the Sunday sunshine, the Maniacs managed to amass just over three figures, setting the Ramblers 110 to win. Once again the bulk of the damage was done by Charlie Thwaites and Arwyn Jones both of whom returned remarkable figures and both of whom bowled six consecutive maidens. Charlie’s figures were 13-10-4-3 and Arwyn’s 12.3-7-4-4.(see Archive >’Bowling’) In their own ways, both sides wicketkeepers were impressive. George Wayman, one year out of Sherborne, was an outstanding specialist keeper. John Blue a natural sportsman, who can field anywhere, made a very good fist of being a ‘stand-in’ keeper.
This was the first time in seven years, when the entire match had been played in warm and sunny weather. That was all the more remarkable given the fact that Buckhorn Weston, along with the rest of Dorset and Somerset, more to follow

At the scheduled start time there was an overcast sky and steady drizzle and some doubt as to whether the match could go ahead, but half an hour later, with the rain stopped and both teams wanting to play, business got underway with the Ramblers opening pair of Ben Copeman and Simon Swainson, Both made a reasonable start and managed to stay together until the tenth over on a strip of variable bounce which made confident strokeplay difficult. The innings then developed into the pattern of most batters making a start – James Lowe, Dan Wrenn and John Hamilton in particular, and Ben Ward standing firm at one end. He survived until late in the day, by then having recorded his first Ramblers fifty in a stay of a minute under two hours. With time passing, the declaration came at a score reasonably sufficient to defend whilst allowing the possibility of inroads.
In what was now a warm summers’s day, the vagaries of the wicket seemed not to affect the home team, and it wasn’t until 53 that Ben Copeman persuaded one opener to chase a widish ball to give a catch at point to Ben Ward. Despite all the right bowling changes being made, further successes were hard to come by – exacerbated by a significant number of wides and byes. Just under 100 was needed by the Pilgrims at the beginning of the last 20 overs, and despite later wickets from Ghulam Qadir, Khalid Muhammad and Simon Oakes, they came through relatively comfortably with 2 overs to spare. Nonetheless an enjoyable start to the Ramblers season, confirmed over a pint at the Red Lion afterwards.

The Ramblers fell 22 runs short in a match played on a slow wicket but a very fast outfield – a recipe for many runs.
The Wayfarers batted first and with the help of an Australian pro opening, looked very secure and scored quickly. The Ramblers opening attack of Rhodri Williams and Harrison Ward bowled very well, for the most part pitching the ball up and bowling straight, but any deviation in length was punished severely. This was probably the youngest opening attack ever fielded – a combined age of 28, both being 14. Dominic Ford, at first change from the hill end bowled much better than his figures suggest – a few flashing chances behind the wicket not going to hand, At the other end the off spin from the tall Ben Lambert promised well but he had no luck, but the third pair of bowlers were marginally more successful albeit a little expensive; Brian Davenport persuading one batter to plant a ball in the hands of a fielder cunningly placed at square leg, and older brother of Rhodri, Tom Williams, instigating a ‘play-on’. The declaration came after 40 overs – a fair one, but a big ask.
Tom Williams and Rob Ward began the chase and immediately looked comfortable, scored freely, but couldn’t sustain, so that after 13 overs both had gone with the board showing 66. Seb Phillips at 3 quickly settled and with elegant driving and firm legside play kept the momentum going, accompanied briefly by Dom Ford who was probably not at his best, Skipper Simon Swainson then shared a stand of 51 with Phillips, who left after a fine half century, mistiming a stroke to mid wicket. Swainson was out shortly after at 157 for a forceful 35, and the rate was still good – marginally under 5 and just in touch. Youngsters Ben Lambert and Harrison Ward then got on with things, both scoring 50s, including some adventurous running (which ultimately brought about their demise), in a hugely enjoyable stand of 104. A mini crisis followed with two wickets going down in the last (and 47th over), inducing some undignified scurrying for pads by no 11, but the draw was achieved, A decent game, played in good spirit on a hot summers’s day at Brook

The Ramblers won the toss and opted to field, and Emeriti were reasonably contained for the first 10 overs – 35 runs for the loss of one wicket, due very much to the economical bowling of Alan Foster with 1-8 in his first 5 overs. After that, with bowling too often short and not very straight on a low, slow pitch and a fast outfield and, crucially, catches being dropped at regular intervals, the score accelerated; 112-1 at the 20th over, and 191-1 at the 30th. Lunch was taken at 203-1 after an hour and forty minutes batting. The runs continued unabated after the break – 262-3 at 40 overs, and the declaration came at 358 at 3.25
To have any sort of a chance of chasing the large target a good start was needed but it didn’t happen; the first four batters were gone by the time 50 was on the board and this score took 14 overs to get to. Of these four only James Straker at 3 made a start but was out on the stroke of tea. Charlie Van Oppen, a youngster on debut, started promisingly but couldn’t stay, which allowed the only decent stand of the innings to get under way courtesy of James Lowe and Alan Foster, who between them put on 87 with positive stroke play all round the wicket. When Foster left, caught and bowled much to his chagrin, 20 minutes remained before the last 20 overs, and the required rate remained forbidding. Lowe remained unperturbed at one end, reaching an excellent half century and was eventually out for a fine 73, but the other batters could offer little resistance to not particularly threatening bowling.
A sort of respectability was achieved by reaching 200 at the end, with 3 of the last 20 overs used, but the fact is, with the honourable exception of Alan Foster, the Ramblers bowling was, for the most part, innocuous, catches were not taken, and most of the batters didn’t get starts. That all said, a match played in good spirit on a pleasant dat, and both sides enjoyed beers and cricket gossip afterwards in the garden of the Dog.

A time/declaration match was agreed after arrival and peasant welcome at the attractive Kampong ground, and, a bonus, playing on one of the few grass wickets in the country. Kampong batted first, to be faced by the opening attack of Wilson pere et fils, and soon resulted in a wicket for Tom who moved one away for skipper Swainson to take an adroit catch behind the wicket. Further success was limited as the strength of the local side became clear; 60-1 at 10 overs becoming 100-1 in 15, and 140 in 20, with two batters retiring after reaching their half centuries. A modicum of success followed when Simon Bennison took a wicket in each of his first two overs, the second a good take at mid-wicket by Dan Wrenn, David Powell took one further wicket but that was the sum of bowling success with Kampong declaring on 223-4 after 32 overs.
This left 1 hour and 20 overs for the Ramblers to make an impression on the target. With John Hamilton going early, progress was slow (26-1 after 10 overs) and with the score at 43-3 at the beginning of the last 20 success was doubtful – and so it proved. Wickets fell at regular intervals with only Richard Chibisa initially and then later Tom Wilson and David Coles contributing significantly. With the 6th wicket going down on 90, survival was the issue, and the draw was achieved with the loss of one more wicket, but there is no doubt Kampong had much the better of the match,
Post match matters went rather better, with conviviality, beer, good food (and presentations and our fines), before it was time to catch the train back to Amtserdam.

Match 2 involved another train journey, but this time a rather shorter one to the village of Bloemendaal, West of Amsterdam and not far from the coast. After a 10 minute walk we arrived at a beautiful ground set amongst trees, on a clear warm day, to a great welcome, a nice pavilion, and the Test on the box. Later in the day we were joined by the Boxall family arriving by bike – Graham injured so not able to play, Terry, and young Louis making his debut in smart tour shirt.
After negotiation between the captains, including whether it was 12 a side or not (never satisfactorily concluded !) the Ramblers were invited to bat first, score 200 and then declare. So it was John Hamilton and David ‘Stick’ Coles who made a steady start with some pleasant deflections and took the score to 61 in 20 overs before the latter departed for a well made 36. Alan Foster at 3 moved the rate along well with a brisk and positive knock, followed by Richard Chibisa in similar vein. At 30 overs 108-3. Tom Wilson joined John Hamilton, who passed his half century and became increasingly aggressive, and, which with some admittedly fairly genial bowling, allowed a declaration after 40 overs, a few runs short of the stipulated 200.
Foster, opening the bowling with Simon Bennison, got an LBW decision against the lady KLM pilot opener, followed soon after with a second victim. Wickets then fell steadily, David Powell being particularly effective and there was also a run out initiated by a fine throw from Wilson junior.76-7 showed on the board after 20 overs, and the prospect of victory beckoned. Then enter the Oz element, who took the score to 148 and much closer to the target before having his off stump removed by Brian Davenport, Alan Foster was unfortunately made hors de combat during this period by a hand injured in trying to take a catch and was unable to take a further cricketing part in the tour (but did umpire and drink well), Despite two more wickets falling, one to an alert stumping by keeper Dan Wrenn and the other to a fine boundary catch by Jens Wair, the home team managed to get home with one wicket in hand and an over to spare, aided this time by a Kiwi. So, in sum, a good game but ultimately a little disappointing for the Ramblers,
Morale was soon restored however after the contest, with drinks, a delicious home cooked curry, chat, and our fines (much to the amusement of our hosts) led by Simon Wilson, and of course the presentations. Then it was the walk back to the station, and train and tram back to the hotel, with a day off to look forward to on Saturday.

For the third and last game there was the least distance to travel; 15 minutes by taxi from the hotel took us to Amstelveen to play SGS (Still Going Strong) CC, the Dutch equivalent of the 40 Club. This was another very pleasant ground on an initially overcast day, but which later was warm and sunny. A 40 over match was agreed and the hosts batted first, but soon a smart catch at gully by Coles off Simon Wilson accounted for one opener, Two more wickets to ‘Guns’ followed, a caught behind to restored keeper Swainson, and the other a well taken pouch at mid off by Richard Chibisa from a firmly struck shot. There then followed a significant stand of 91 by the immovable and impressive SGS opener and his then partner, both unable to be prised out by the spin of Davenport and Wair. The introduction of Tom Wilson to the attack then transformed matters; in just over 5 overs he cleaned bowled 5 batsman with pace and cut, and Dan Wrenn took the remaining wicket, courtesy of a brilliant one handed diving catch at short mid wicket by Jens Wair. SGS all out with an over left of the 40.
A decent score to chase therefore at just under 5 an over but on a relatively small pitch. Skipper Simon Swainson’s rough run of no form continued after a promising boundary when he was bowled in the first over. Richard Chibisa came next, and together with Dan Wrenn, proceeded to flay the rather senior bowling attack to all parts at comfortably over 10 an over. Chibisa eventually swung and missed in the 8th over but had provided an exhilarating 30 minutes. Dan Wrenn continued unabated, 6s and 4s, legside being his forte, reached his century with a six (one of 10) before being caught at slip 11 short of the total needed, Tom Wilson who had been elegantly batting with him, accompanied by John Hamilton, soon secured the victory by 7 wickets in only 15.5 overs – a run rate of over 12. SGS CC, by definition, were not a young side and consequently not as capable in the field as the Ramblers, but all was taken in good part.
Then it was a return to the main club pavilion – large and well-appointed, for jugs of lager, delicious snacks, lots of cricket talk (and more jugs of lager) before taxis were summoned to take the return journey to Amsterdam and preparations for the tour dinner.

A Ramblers party with a number of tour debutants gathered at Stansted on 21st May, and at Heathrow on the 23rd for adventure No 20, this time to Greece, in particular to the island of Corfu. The ‘advance party’ of five left a couple of days earlier to have more holiday time on the island before the cricket began. 17 more flew in on the Saturday, via Athens, to join the others, to be met by our splendid host, Nikos Louvros of Cricket Corfu. So it was a party of 22 that were then lodged at the Cavalieri Hotel, itself a very convenient few minutes walk from the centre of Old Corfu Town and the venue of the first match. The first port of call on arrival was the outstanding rooftop bar on the top of the hotel where cold beers were seen off with alacrity. That vital matter having been addressed it was off to local restaurant the Bougenvillia and an early intrduction to the first class Greek food and drink, including klftiko, calamari, safritso and so on – and some very decent house red.

Sunday 24th began with a leisurely morning and lunch, prior to the late afternoon 20/20 match v Atlas CC at the historic Liston Platea ground. Without much knowledge of relative standards, skipper John Hamilton chose to bat on the ‘interesting’ and small ground – in terms of conditions. Graham Boxall and Doug Foster it was who opened up against some benign bowling with the required plastic ball (a safety requirement for nearby local onlookers not versed in cricket). The pair having had a look then advanced the score to 82 before, in the 13th over, Foster was caught behind, to be replaced by Richard Chibisa whose first scoring shot, inimitably, was a 6. Boxall was by now well into his stride and continued to pepper the car park (some of it part of the outfield) and cafe society lounging on the other side, and eventually went for 107 out of 168 (16 4s and 3 6s) – his sixth tour hundred. It included 34 off an over from the hapless Papadopolous. Lively support continued at the other end from Chibisa and a finishing cameo from Rob Ward allowed a total of 185-4, with Dom Childs contributng a rugged red inker.
After tea, Atlas began their response but quickly fell prey to opening bowlers Harrison Ward and Alan Foster each with two wickets, followed up by David Powell and Mario Picceri with three and one respectively, so that with batter 11 Koronakis deciding (arguably wisely) to go home early, the 9th wicket fell at 19 to a run out – a winning margin for the Ramblers of 166 runs. After the first fines session at the rooftop bar, managed faultlessly by Terry Boxall, with 3 year old Louis collecting the readies, it was off to another splendid restaurant for dinner

187-8 188-2
It was straight into Match 2 on Monday, and a very different scenario. Although scheduled to be against Hellas CC, the match was in fact against a Corfu Select XI at Gouvia Marina, a few miles up the coast and a good sized ground. After a presentation from the Chairman of the Hellenic Cricket Federation and pleasantries exchanged, business began. In a 35 over a side match, the toss was won again and the Ramblers batted with David Coles and Rob Ward starting. Against a much better attack than the day before, progress was cautious, and wickets fell – 28-3 after 10 overs and 43-4 after 17, when Graham Boxall went. An excellent stand of 84 followed, albeit not a rapid one, by Ben Ward and an increasingly fluent Doug Foster, who remaind undefeated with 76, suported by vignettes from Richard Chibisa and Harrison Ward and an unreasonably urgently run knock by John Hamilton. The innings closed on 187-8.
Corfu select started briskly and were soon ahead of the required rate, only losing their first wicket at 71 after 10 overs to a stumping by Hamilton off Boxall. This double act secured a second wicket (to allow Graham to draw level with Chris Terry’s 37 tour wickets) but it was too late to make a real difference. Some catches were put down during the innings and some variable bowling arguably made the difference; in the end the home team came through comfortably in the 23rd over to win by 8 wickets. Post match it was a short walk to Zorba’s (who else’s) reataurant for dinner and fines, with, as entertainment, live music by a trio and a local hound attaching itself to the tour manager, only to be distracted by a local cat (you had to be there). After vast helpings of food it was off in the coach once more and back to the hotel.
Tuesday was the ‘free day’ for people to do their own thing, but as it happened the excellent Nikos had arranged a special lunch followed by a boat trip. The lunch was wonderfully fresh made tsatsiki and calamari, followed by just caught and grilled dorado fish with Greek salad, accompanied by some tolerably nice white. Then a few yards walk to the Calypso, a glass bottomd boat, for an hour’s submarine viewing and sea lion display; all very entertaining, The by now established ritual of meeting on the rooftop bar and dinner saw the evening taken care of.
26 May v BYRON CC (at Gouvia Marina) – CANCELLED (weather)
Wednesday was the day for the looked forward to third and final match again at Gouvia Merina, this time against Byron CC. The party set off early to take advantage of the swimming pool at the marina on what loooked like being a warm, pleasant day. As the time for the match got nearer however, the clouds started to gather and a torrential downpour followed, making it quite impossible to play a match. A great pity – especially as it turned out it hadn’t rained anywhere else on the island. As it was the last full day it was time for the tour dinner – but before setting off everyone met as usual at the rooftop bar with it’s fantastic views, for some bracers and presentations (see picture below). The dinner was a short walk away in the town at the Pipisteria, sitting outside under awnings, and was yet another fine Greek meal, with as tradition demanded, all the men wearing their Ramblers ties, and with the ladies, as always, glamorous to a fault. With the final fines session at the end conducted with verve by Steve Andow, and collected with by great expertise and enthusiasm by Louis Boxall, it was back once more for a final drink (or two) at the hotel.
DOUG FOSTER, KEVIN LILLIS, BEN WARD, BRIAN DAVENPORT, MAGGIE HAMILTON, ALISON WARD, HARRISON WARD, ROB WARD, STEVE ANDOW, DOM CHILDS, GILL MORTENSEN, JOHN HAMILTON, JO COUGHLAN, TERRY BOXALL, ROSEMARY LILLIS, LOUIS BOXALL, MARIO PICCERI, GRAHAM BOXALL, DAVID POWELL, ALAN FOSTER
It was sadly time to leave on Thursday after what had been a very pleasant few days in an especially friendly place, and with all the new tourists appearing to enjoy themselves thoroughly. All in all, pretty much what a Ramblers tour is expected and supposed to be.

On an overcast day at Betchworth, for the first home-based match of the season, the team met for pre-match lunch and drinks at the Red Lion next door to he ground, and the opportunity taken to welcome back James Straker and family on a visit from Miami. Having just finished lunch in time to alow for a marginally respectable start at 2.15, the home team put the Ramblers in.
Old friends James Straker and Fred Lowe started steadily, with the former, despite now being more familiar with a baseball bat, conjured five boundaries in a brisk knock. The rather grassy track with uneven bounce was proving quite difficult, and progress was sedate rather than dashing, with only 51 on the board after 20 overs (and despite a modicum of elegance from John Prynne). Some acceleration was clearly needed and this was provided but delicious vignettes from David Prynne, Richard Chibisa, and Dan Wrenn, supported the while at the other end by skipper John Hamilton – who unfortunately then had to retire having pulled not one but both hamstrings. The scoring rate then necessarily picked up with some lusty striking and hard running from Simons Swainson and Oakes. With the close on 156 after 43.3 overs, the general view at that point was that another 20/30 runs would have made the match situation more comfortable.
After an excellent tea, and with scorer/supersub Brian Davenport taking the field in lieu of the skipper, the contrasting styles of Dan Wrenn and Simon ‘Guns’ Wilson took the ball, with early success for the latter with his big inswing inducing a ‘play on’. Wrenn supported quickly and well but without success – a fact noted then and later with some relish by his team mates. The Pilgrims progressed reasonably comfortably and after 18 overs when the last 20 began were 44-2, therefore needing between 5 and 6 an over. At 81-5 with 13 overs left they were still in touch, but Tim Oakes and David Prynne (whose spell got better and better the longer he bowled) had been whittling the wickets away – supported by really good catching, and continued to do so in their 7 over spells. With 7 wickets down and the score on 91 the coup de grace was then administered by Simon Oakes and Richard Chibisa with 5 overs to spare and a 52 run margin.

Stand of 109 for the 1st wicket by Rob Williams and Seb Phillips, and of 139 for the 3rd wicket by Alan and Doug Foster
At Sunbury’s splendidly appointed ground, a high scoring match largely as a result of a good pitch, a short boundary on one side, and persistent short bowling by both teams. The Ramblers won the toss and decided to bat and openers Seb Phillips and Rob Williams confidently reached 100 in 16 overs before both departed. Numbers 3 and 4 Alan and Doug Foster reunited on the cricket field for the first time since the Corfu tour also put on a stylish and on occasions flamboyant 100 together. With play being held up for 35 minutes due to rain, the declaration came in the 40th over, with what looked like a competitive target. Sunbury chased confidently and quickly and wickets were hard to come by, and although their progress was slowed by good spells by Cameron Oosthuizen and Doug Foster in the end they came home comfortably by 4 wickets with 3 overs to spare.

Set against the imposing backdrop of Charterhouse School, Simon Swanson won the toss and decided to bat. Fellow opener Seb Phillips set about the acquisition of runs with fine drives and one particularly deft reverse sweep and reached a fine successive half century. Despite threatening a large total – batters starting to get in but then departing, it was only a typically audacious flurry from Richard Chibisa that brought a reasonably respectable score, sufficient to set Nomads five an over. With wickets being taken regularly by the Ramblers, aided by good catching, a win aways seemed on the cards, but uninhibited striking by Yadav prevented this and the visitors came home with 3 overs remaining.

Trevor Evans and Alan Foster got the Ramblers off to a brisk start until the latter got a shooter, to be succeeded by Ben Copeman whose forays at expaasive driving before too long induced a catch behind in the 11th over. With 68 scored in the first hour, Evans and Roger White continued with a useful stand, but then both went caught within a run of each other, the board then showing 93-3 – a reasonable base for a repectable score, however two quick wickets changed matters, so half the side now out for 100. Fortunately a stand of 42 by the elegant Doug Foster and positive Joe Ireland restored some momentum and the score advanced, but by the time 150 was reached both had gone. Afte a brief foray from the captain, and an elegant and undefeated knock from Simon Bennison the innings closed on 162 after 42 overs.
The Emeriti openers proceeded untroubled and passed 100 in the 18th over, with bowling changes having little impact. Then the deserving White got a wicket from a fine catch at long on by Doug Foster, followed shortly after by Ian Marshall bowling the other opener, but with 129 then on the board and lots of time and overs left the outcome was predictable – a very comfortable win for Emeriti. Nonetheless, as always, an enjoyable match in a long standing fixture. The bottom line is that the Ramblers didn’t get enough runs to challenge Seb Phillips’s very capable visiting team.
