CANADA TOUR 21st – 31st AUGUST
Standing : GEORGE ADAMS, WALLACE GRAHAM, JAMES RANSOME, BOB O’DWYER, STEVE ANDOW, SUE ANDOW, JASON WILSON, JANE HUGHES
Sitting : JEREMY PARR, JOHN HAMILTON, TREVOR KIDSON, BRIAN DAVENPORT, JON STONEBRIDGE
This is the main part of a letter from Brian Davenport to Christopher Terry, describing the tour (with match details included) :
‘ 2nd September
Dear Christopher,
We all returned from British Columbia on Saturday morning (less Jon Stonebridge and Jane Hughes staying on for a holiday, and George Adams working in Canada), from a marvellous tour. I still feel jetlagged – or maybe it is just the playing and social rigours of the tour !
OUR HOSTS – DAVID AND VIVIAN BILLINGHAM
But back to the beginning; the party duly gathered at Gatwick (on time and all with passports) to begin what was a long and tiring journey – two stops en route at Goose Bay and at Calgary, before landing at Vancouver, and then on by ferry for nearly two hours to Vctoria, where we were met by David Billingham with a 15 seat minivan (which we then used for the duration of the tour). Then an hours drive into Victoria from the ferry terminal to our accommodation at the Union Club – from which we were then taken immediately to the local pub for a beer (about 1 am local time). The Union Club is a private one; very traditional and much like a London club or an old style Officers Mess, and looked after us extremely well at very reasonable rates. The second day was mainly travel recovery and sightseeing in Victoria – which is a lovely place, very British in many ways. On the Friday we played our first match against the Beacon Hill Pavilion Society (40 overs a side – as were all matches), with a splendid sit down lunch between innings, and serious and lengthy drinking after the game (including mutual presentations and our ‘fines’). We lost by 37 runs, chasing, but perhaps in retrospect might have performed better. Jeremy Parr made a very good 98 before being run out. We discovered that the opposition captain, Paul Homewood, had played for the Ramblers with Jeremy when both were much younger – an extraordinary coincidence.

WHALE WATCHING; READY TO GO
JASON WILSON, GEORGE ADAMS, JAMES RANSOME, JEREMY PARR, JANE HUGHES, JOHN HAMILTON, SUE ANDOW, JON STONEBRIDGE, BRIAN DAVENPORT
Kneeling :STEVE ANDOW, TREVOR KIDSON
Saturday and Sunday were taken up with non-cricketing activities, including whale watching – the party dressed in orange wetsuits in a high speed boat all to ourselves, when we saw killer whales, sea lions and seals, and then 1 hour flights in a light plane, 2 at a time, piloted by one of the opposition players, over Vancouver Island. Both events absolutely memorable (and a step up from dolphins in Gibraltar !). Around them meals out and more sightseeing. On the Saturday evening we all went up to Buchart Gardens, to see the magnificent displays of flowers, trees and shrubs, and for the firework display to classical music as dusk fell – again memorable. On the Monday we drove ‘up island’ to play Cowichan CC, who have a tiny ground in what appeared to be the middle of the pine forests; another wonderful day, this time successfully on the field chasing 198 (John Hamilton scoring 100*). Afterwards we were given a superb barbecue and were looked after in the friendliest way possible – again including presentations and our ‘fines’, all of which went down very well. I met an old Army chum playing for Cowichan, now settled in BC, who I hadn’t seen for years – another happy coincidence.

JOHN HAMILTON AND BRIAN DAVENPORT OPENING THE BATTING
Early on Tesday (about 7 am, more or less conscious) it was off from the Union Club in the minivan to the ferry terminal at Swartz Bay to catch the 8 am ferry to Vancouver, where we were then moved to our hotel in the middle of the city, prior to the third match that afternoon against Richmond CC at Stanley Park – a beautiful ground surrounded on three sides by Vancouver harbour, with ships and seaplanes constantly coming and going during the day. This match was losr, again after batting first; 170 proved not enough. The opposition were mainly Indian and West Indian, and a very nice crowd, again entertaining us most hospitably afterwards. We were a bit down after the loss, especially as our opponents retired their batsmen as they drew closer to their target (not particularly well received by us, but there were no hard feelings), and very determined to win the last match. Touring party spirits were however reinforced by a team curry later that evening.

On Wednesday we arrived at the last match, against Meroloma CC, on a ground just outside the city centre. The opposition were mostly expat Australians, with a leavening of South Africans and locals. We batted first again and got about 170, and got the opposition out for 156 – a nailbiting finish as they looked like winning comfortably, but good bowling from Jon Stonebridge and Steve Andow did the business. Everyone was highly elated to finish with a win, which increased our enjoyment of another excellent barbecue and large amounts of beer. We also, in the form of Jane and Sue, beat them at darts ! George Adams drunk a yard of ale in response to a challenge, and Trevor tried to emulate him – with more limited success; much of the contents failing to reach their intended destination.

Thursday was the last full free day and so we all went in the minivan to Whistler – about two hours away to the North, and had another glorious day. After lunch we took the ski lift up to the top of the mountain (6000′) where there were dramatic views of the surrounding landscape – and enough snow to throw snowballs at each other.
That evening we returned for the tour dinner at an Italian restaurant called Il Giardinos, quite close to the hotel, where we ate and drank heroically (again !). We entertained David and Vivian Bellingham to thank them both for all their help in setting the tour up. Trevor gave a very good speech to wrap things up, and we then eventually moved back to the hotel bar and closed it about 1.30 am. Friday morning was last minute shopping, prior to moving to the airport for the return journey, which we duly completed, landing at Gatwick at 9.30 am on Saturday morning. Three of us then went to play cricket for Brook in the afternnon – John H, Jeremy, and myself; we must be crazy, but scored 49,41*, and 54 respectively !
I’ve taken rather long to describe the tour, but thought you would like to know how it all went; it was the most tremendous fun, and enjoyed greatly by all; we managed to cram an enormous number of things in. The weather throughout, with the exception of one overcast day (27th) was glorious – 70-80 degrees. The touring party, as always, gelled together very well and got on with each other famously. The late additions to the party – James Ransome, Bob O’Dwyer and Wally Graham were excellent tourists, although didn’t do particularly well on the field. Trevor however captained excellently, ensuring that they felt they had contributed to the team effort.
Yours
Brian’

This was a special day in Ramblers history, playing on a Test ground and with two current West Indies players, Brian Lara and Mervyn Dillon. Both were taking the opportunity for some match practice prior to a Test match in Guyana a week or so later, and we were soon sharing the ground and treated to the skills of one of the world’s best ever batsmen. After surviving a possible caught behind off his Test colleague, he placed the ball exactly where he wanted with no discernible effort (and almost always where fielders weren’t), until eventually, arguably deliberately, chipping a ball to square leg to be caught by Jon Stonebridge off Adrian Walton (the latter still dining out on this feat !). A large score accumulated to chase, but not before we were treated to a splendid lunch hosted by the Secretary of the Queens Park Club together with suitable speeches made. The Ramblers innings was distinguished by a very good half century from Mark Milliken-Smith, but others found it difficult to get the ball away in the face of some good quick bowling. At the end of the match, Brian Lara came into our dressing room and shook everyone’s hand; a generous and much appreciated gesture from a charming man, which none there will ever forget. After that it was to the bar and sharing beers as the sun went down with some retired first class cricketers who had come along for the ‘lime’. A wonderful day.

A good all-round performance won the match on a flat pitch on a lovely sunny day. The Ramblers made early inroads thanks to Mike Lush whose first eleven overs saw him take 3-9 including a superb one-handed catch off his own bowling. A good over rate was maintained throughout even when the main partnership of the Hogs was being built. Will Robinson bowled quickly without much luck while Ben Candy produced an excellent spell of accurate swing bowling to keep the runs down. Shaun Hocking, after a rusty start, settled in to a good long spell of off-breaks. A man short, the Hogs finished 261 all out off 61 overs.
The Ramblers had just 47 overs to get the runs and lost two quick wickets before George Lane and Graham Boxall put together an impressively stylish 73, and then Craig Williams came in to score a very brisk 31. Williams and Lane fell at 152 and with 6 an over required, good batting was required. The two young Australians, Hocking and Robinson, then ran superbly between the wickets and the fielders were run ragged as ones appeared from nowhere and twos and threes appeared where there had seemed only singles. Eventually victory came with four and a half overs to spare.

On a very slow and flat wicket with short boundaries a big opening total and a penetrative attack was always going to be necessary to produce a competitive match and the Ramblers did not quite achieve or have either. Winning the toss skipper Brian Davenport decided to bat, but the unfortunate early run out of Ed Jones triggered two other early wickets – so 21-3 was not the required start, but the captain held up one end whilst debutant Rambler Max Templeman struck a positive 40, followed by some brisk blows from Ed Katzler. Enter Somerset Pheasant brandishing his Woodworm Wand who proceeded to despatch the ball to all parts regardless of length and line presented, to reach 64 with 15 fours, and to share a stand of 107 with Davenport (who occasionally got the ball off the square to eventually succumb for 71). Some finishing flourishes by Tim Goodman and Rowly Bourne completed a reasonable total.
The Downs set off rapidly, courtesy of some fairly wayward bowling and the injury breakdown of Ed Katzler, and remained untroubled despite various bowling changes until 172, when the persistent and accurate Rowly Bourne took a well deserved wicket. That sadly was the height of it and a nine wicket defeat was the result with time and overs in hand. This however did not entirely spoil an enjoyable day with hospitable hosts.

A wet pitch delayed the start to 1.30 – perhaps just as well, as many of both sides were still recovering from the excellent Brook fundraising party at the ground the evening before. On what looked like a helpful wicket home captain Martin Underwood asked the Ramblers to bat and had early success when John Hamilton nicked one of Adrian Walton’s outswingers. Mark Milliken-Smith then came in, looking a little more peaky than others present, and proceeded to take the Brook attack apart, recording an outstanding century (including six sixes), eventually being out last but one. At the other end the middle order succumbed to Australian off spinner Sean Hocking, until fellow Aussie Will Robinson and Graham Sherwood swung rustically and effectively to make the final score respectable but not necessarily comfortable.
John Pheasant and Mark Haslam began for Brook, but early on the former was felled twice (hit on the foot) by Will Robinson bowling fast coming down the hill, had to retire hurt, and was not able to return until the end. Soon after another senior pro injury occurred when Brian Davenport successfully headed a deflected ball from keeper Pheasant at first slip (instead of catching it), and had to take a short count amidst a pint or two of claret – but got up and carried on eventually, mainly because he was captain and was determined to have a bowl. Somerset Pheasant supported well at the other end and was rewarded with the in-form Haslam’s wicket. At 20 overs Brook were 90-3 and in fair shape for the chase, but then slowed down and lost wickets at regular intervals, due to steady bowling from Graham Sherwood and Chris Coe. The latter, on his Ramblers comeback, bowled at vastly reduced pace from when he was less mature, but pitched the ball up – and got the rewards, supported by keen fielding and catching. At the end the home side was hanging on for a draw, until with 4 overs remaining of the 20, Somerset Pheasant brought off a stunning one-hand catch at short square leg to remove the obdurate Steve Brander and win the match.
As always, a most enjoyable match with old friends on either side, lots of youngsters playing, and a nice lunch. Shame about the overcast weather and the Dog being closed on Sunday evenings !

With the opposition keen to have a result one way or the other, 40 overs a side was agreed on, with Ramblers bowling first. A varied and accurate attack, not always using the facilities, but backed up by safe catching and fielding, produced immediate and then regular results, so that Devizes could not use all their overs and posted only a modest total. Alex Tucker and Aussie Sean Hocking were the pick of the bowlers – and all were managed intuitively managed by skipper Somerset Pheasant.
Three an over was not a big ask, and was achieved perhaps more comfortably than the scorecard suggests – dominated by an excellent 50 by Rob Jones, who used his feet to great effect, and by a solid positive start from Toby Pheasant. The other batsmen found interesting and different ways of getting out, but the result was never in serious doubt, and 25 overs was enough to do the job.
* – the home scorebook filled in by them for their innings was akin to a Chinese crossword puzzle; how they made their score 120 is not clear, but was accepted by the Ramblers as the target !
