Surrey Advertiser report :
For the first time for several years, the Ramblers beat Henfield and it proved to be a thrilling game. Henfield were put in and started shakily on a spongey wicket, losing their first three wickets for 21. Silverson (37) and Parey (60) then shared a stand of almost 100 until Paul K night put paid to Silverson with a brilliant diving caught and bowled. Then followed a second Henfield collapse with 4 wickets falling for 6 runs – Parey being caught in the deep by Gerry Cogger off Don Barnes. After 3 hours batting, Henfield declared at 162-9
The Ramblers opened shakily with Tony Wood being bowled by Drake when the score was only 18. In the next over Nick Harper was also castled by Drake without the score advancing. Wiseman (20) and Cogger soon followed and the Ramblers looked to be in trouble with the score at 40-4
Peter Hodges and Roy Hardy slowly built up a stand of 72 before Hodges was caught in the deep by Marcus off Stevens. Hodges innings of 66 included one 6 and eight 4s and was a splendid example of fortune favouring the brave in particularly difficult batting conditions. With Hodges and Hardy both out, the Ramblers still needed 24 to win, and owe it to the two Gauntletts and Don Barnes for sensibly amassing the other runs. With 1.4 overs remaining, Michael Gauntlett ended the match in splendid style by hitting the Henfield pavilion with a towering 6.

This all-day match was not intended to be one of 2 innings. Martlets, batting first, were all out soon after lunch, and the Ramblers passed their total with two wickets down. With time left in the game it was decided Ramblers would bat on and then declare, which they did, leaving the Martlets 139 to win, starting at 5.30, which they failed to achieve.

For the first time in many years, Normandy tumbled to Sydenhurst. Batting first on a beautiful wicket, the bowling of the Ramblers was very ineffective and 68 runs were put on without loss. Normandy continued in this way until they made their very generous declaration at 185-4, Stuff striking a confident 80*.
Two runs were scored, two wickets were lost – and it took the Ramblers 33 minutes to achieve this. Then Nick Pearse and Hugh Gauntlett responded to the challenge to pass the Normandy total in 38 overs – scoring 100 off only 15 overs

Reading fell without a whimper to become the Ramblers’ third victim over the holiday weekend. After Cogger had ripped them apart with a destructive spell, only a stubborn innings of 28* by Pitt helped them reach 78 all out.
Massey and Pitt bowled accurately for Reading and both openers were unsteady. Finally it fell to Underwood and Childs to score the required runs with ease.

The Ramblers won the toss and elected to bat which was a mistake in view of the fact that the pitch was rain affected and the Teddington opening bowler Oliver, was able to put a lot of lift on the ball and he soon claimed the wickets of batsmen of the calibre of Harper. In really difficult conditions David Childs and Peter Hodges pieced together a respectable pre-lunch score, with the able assistance of Don Barnes, who went in to bat with the sole object of keeping his end up until the spite was out of the wicket. This laid the foundation on which Gerry Cogger and Hugh Gauntlett were to build after lunch. Even so, the Ramblers failed to capitalise on the hard work that Childs and Barnes had done before lunch and were all out for 155.
This was no score to set an opposition which included three cricketers who had scored over 1000 runs each in the season. At 3.30 it was the turn of Teddington to make the mistakes; they put the roller on and this helped revive the spite into the pitch. Terry and Cogger used it to their advantage and had Teddington at 98-8, but even at this score Cushing thought he could win the match singlehanded, but after an arrogant display he was finally removed for 32.

The Ramblers got the better of this encounter with the Hogs, a club having 20 times more playing membership and which had only lost two of its previous matches in the season. The Ramblers elected to field first as is invariably their policy and the Hogs were soon in trouble with 2 wickets down for 5 runs. Bodkin and Martin (guesting from Basingstoke) then staged a recovery before the latter was out – yorked by Gerry Cogger, with the score at 76. Half an hour before lunch, Don Barnes and Mike Bacon replaced the seam bowling with spin and Bacon captured the wickets of Bodkin and Kendall, and at lunch both sides seemed content with the score at 100-5. Hogs had set their sights on another130 runs after lunch, but this was not to be. Terry, Cogger and Cockburn accounted for the remaining 5 wickets after lunch for a further 54 runs. This was really as the result of brilliant fielding and careless batting rather than good bowling.
The Ramblers started their innings badly, losing Tony Wood and Roger Scott at 23 and it looked as though the Hogs were establishing a definite advantage. Peter Hodges and Nick Pearse then shared a stand of 67, ending when Hodges was eventually caught by Martin off Townsend after a yet another excellent rescue innings. The match was looking to be firmly within the Ramblers grasp until Julian Ince and Hugh Gauntlett were both out bowled as the result of injudicious slogging. Once again the pendulum had swung in the Hogs favour and it was then left to Cogger and Barnes to take the Ramblers to victory with sensible and unselfish batting.

From the Surrey Advertiser, 19 May 74
‘ Haslemere lost a close game against Sydenhurst Ramblers on Sunday by 7 runs. Haslemere dismissed old rivals Ramblers for 120 – their lowest score for many years – but still could not quite match this total. The visditors lost their first two wickets for 16 and struggled against accurate bowling by Norman Woods who had match figures of 2-41 off 22 consecutive overs. Haslemere fielded well and held their catches and Ramblers were all out at tea. Haslemere made runs steadily and while Norman Woods and Bob Haynes were at the wicket were in with a chance of victory. However when they were out the remaining batsmen found Gerry Cogger and Paul Knight – in his second spell, too formidable.’
