76-8 129-8d
Merrow crawled to a declaration at 3.50 pm on 129-8 in 165 minutes. Mike O’Sullivan had bowled 16 overs including 10 maidens in 4 spells at them, for 22 runs taking one wicket. Mike Gauntlett took 5-33 at the other end. One interesting point arises from the scorebook – Lionel Wood was keeping wicket when he caught his catch. Was Winton Dean, who was also playing, injured ? Charlie Izzard and David Gilby gave Ramblers a reasonable start, but with 24 on the board, Gilby was caught at the wicket by – guess who – Gordon Smith – and then Ronnie Gethen was bowled for a duck first ball. Ramblers never really recovered and at 60 lost 3 wickets in 6 balls. They hung on for a draw to reach 76-8 when play ended unusually late for this time of year at 6.34 pm

Ramblers came to this delightful venue behind the Red Lion pub, Betchworth for the second time in 1949 on Sunday October 2nd. They had been beaten by 45 runs in July, and this was their last game of the season. From a late start at this time of year – 2.51 pm, Ramblers batted aggressively and in two hours put on 191 before declaring for the loss of only 5 wickets off the 40 overs bowled. The first four batsmen all got in to the 30s and 4 sixes were recorded. Reigate Pilgrims were never able to recover from 11-3 off 4 overs. Denis Mackley bowled 4 overs, taking 4 wickets for 9 runs before being relieved by Ronnie Gethen’s slightly less aggressive pace, Reigate’s opener, Cliff Osborne, had watched the devastation from the bowler’s end before hitting his wicket facing Mike Gauntlett’s slow left arm lobs to make the score 33-5. Ede came in at 9 and hit Gethen for two sixes but it was too late and Ramblers ran out winners by 110 runs
